Itinerary description
This ride is suitable for gravel or mtb bikes. It starts from Sondrio, easily reachable with a direct train from Milan. The destination is Lake Colima, a very beautiful and tiny mountain lake, at more than 2000mt of altitude, with a wide view on most of the Valtellina Valley and the Orobie peaks on the other side. The road is tarmac for more of half of its length, mostly in the woods with brief views of the mountains around. The last 10ish km before the highest point are on a double track. This is also the most beautiful and scenic part, cycling with a clear view of the valley on your left.
Water availability is not a problem because there are fresh water fountains on most of the villages you'll go through in the fist part of the ascent, and near Lake Colima as well.
On the way down, the fist part is still a pretty rocky double-track road, and can be a bit steep in some spots.
Once returned to asphalt again, in Tessaglia you can stop to observe the very unique rock formations, there is also a short pleasant walk in the to go around them. They're right on the way back, no detour is necessary.
This route is not too long in length, but it has a discreet elevation gain. It could take between 5 and 7 hours depending on the fitness level.
