Itinerary description
We started out early and rode to Scottsdale where the NE rail trail begins. We had a coffee and then started off on the trail. It runs flat for a while on a varied surface and then after a few kilometres it starts its steady rise. Being a rail trail the gradient never exceed 1:40 so it was good constant pedaling without too much strain. The countryside changes to lush rainforest. We rode though several rock cuttings and the whole experience was quite wonderful. On the way up we were only passed by two young women on unloaded mountain bike and only a few others going downhill in the opposite direction. Once back on the main road it was not long before we had a pleasant free wheel down into Branxton where we stopped for a simple lunch. We then continued on the Derby for our next stop at the Dorset Hotel. This was the only accommodation we could get as everything else was booked out. We can't recommend the Dorset hotel although it is cheap. It is also noisy and smelly. We found a place for dinner and turned in early. 706 metres of climb.
