a Marsellain Plage, passant per les vinyes de Burdeus, el Canal
Lateral del Garona i el canal de Midi.

Cycling near the Garonne and the Midi Canal. The first part of the trip
is through the hilly vineyard of Bordeaux, till reaching the Canal
Lateral of Garonne to Toulouse and then the Midi Canal and finally
reach
the Mediterranean Sea at Marsellain Plage. The route changes from
Atlantic weather to mediterranean weather so the vegetation changes
every stage.



SUMMARY OF THE
ROUTE

It's in 7 stages, four of them from Burdeus to Toulouse and three from
Toulouse to the Marsellain plage, in the Mediterranean sea. This is a
bike trip to ride along the navigable system of France from the
Atlantic ocean to the Mediterranena sea. The navigable system was first
acomplished with the Canal of Midi, from Toulouse to the Mediterranean,
inaugurated in 1681. From Tolouse to the Atlantic the ship navegated
the Garona. Years later, the Canal Lateral of Garone was constructed to
make easier to navigates, because of the irregular flood of the river.

The first part of the route
crosses the Bordeaux vineyards, between
chateaux and cellars. Sometimes we ride beside the Garone River. 
It's quite hilly, but this part is less of th first stage.

Then we started the second part,
the Canal Lateral de Garone. From
second to fourth stage, we ride along the cycle track, always paved.
The climate is quite wet and we have atlantic vegetation. All the way
is flat, except for some visits to adjacents villages. We arrive at
Tolouse, at the port of embochure. Here starts de Canal Lateral Garone,
Canal Midi and Canal of Briene (which leads inmediately to the Garone
River).

Here starts the third part of
the trip, the Canal of Midi. Three hard
stages following the way of towrope next to the canal. Some times is
paved some times not. The vegetation turns more and more mediterranean,
the weather more hot and dry, till we arrive the Mediterranean. Between
Tolouse and Carcassone we reach Seuil de Naurouze, the point of partage
des aux. The somment of the trip. Here we stop climbing slightly
remounting the canal locks, and we start a long way down, canal locks
descending to the Mediterranean. After Carcassone, the path gets more
narrow and the way more for mountain bikes.



WHICH BIKE

The better is a trekking bike, but the Canal of Midi alone perhaps
better a mountain bike, for the roots of the trees. The more suspesion,
the better.



WHEN TO GO

Best time is late spring early summer. For the atlantic part summer is
ok, but in Mediterranean part can be too hot.



HOW TO GET THERE

There are trains from Bordeux to Narbonne, and you can carry the bike.
So you can do the combination you need



WHERE TO STAY

We stayed at little hotels with can be reserved by booking.com .There
are also some campings, specially municipals in many cities.



DIFFICULTIES

The first part is quite hilly and difficult to find without a GPS.
Weather can be a bit wet depending on the part of the year. Canal
Lateral Garone is very easy and flat to ride. Canal of Midi is very
flat, but the way of towrope turns narrow and with tree's roots that
difficult the riding. In summer can be quite hot in this part of the
trip.

    Ruta que permet gaudir d'aquest entorn de gran vellesa i que a mesura que abançes en el trajecte, es pot apreciar el canvi de paissatge creat pel clima Atlàntic i el clima Mediterrani.

    De tant en tant surt del canal per pedalar entre vinyes i poblets amb encant, encara que el grux de la rura es fa pel canal.

    Val la pena seguir-lo fil parranda.

    Late march or april, can be not too cold, specially the mediterranian part. From Bordeaux to Tolouse can be colder and rainy, because of the atlantic influence. From Toulouse to the Mediterranean sea, weather is warmer and less rainy. Good luck.

    He fet aquesta ruta, però començant a Port La Nouvelle i acabant-la a Lacanau. He de dir que és magnífica. Desprès vaig continuar fins Saint Jean de Luz. Esperava veure l'oceà, però solament vaig veure pins i més pins. L'any vinent faré una altra ruta encara més llarga. La bici és el futur, sense dubte.

    Hola,
    En primer lugar, enhorabuena por la ruta, es muy bonita.
    Estamos pensando en hacer esta ruta con los niños en julio. Tenemos un niño de 12 y otro de 10 y se hacen 40 kms por vias verdes sin problemas. ¿Cómo veis hacerla hasta Toulouse con los niños? ¿hay alguna dificultad a remarcar para ellos? Cuántos días tardaríamos. Es posible haciendo al día unos 40 kms encontrar alojamiento facilmente sin reservar? Qué consejos nos daríais? Gracias por vuestra ayuda. Saludos

    Hola, yo no hice esa ruta sino esta: Irún Bèziers (Canal del Garona y du Midi) que está en http://es.wikiloc.com/wikiloc/view.do?id=3192014

    Si es una buenísima idea.

    Si hacen 40 km sin problemas van a poder hacer el viaje y con muchísima ilusión, incluso es muy probable que os salga una media más alta. Podréis hacer más si así surge.

    Es absolutamente llana e ideal para lo que os proponéis. He visto a familias con niños en los que los padres (fundamentalmente él) llevaban casi toda la carga.

    Es recomendable a las 5 de la tarde dar por acabada la jornada y comenzar a buscar alojamiento, los franceses tienen un horario desplazado hacia el amanecer.

    Recomiendo las Chambres d'hôtes, casas rurales en las que te alquilan habitaciones con desayuno incluido y con cena si llegas pronto (nunca llegué, creo que se paga aparte). Una buena referencia es localizarlas en las ofinas de turismo y a eso de las 11 o 12 de la mañana fijándose un lugar hasta donde llegar. También hay hoteles a unos 50/60 euros noche incluyendo el desayuno y Francia es el paraiso del camping en muchos de ellos con cafetería, supermercado, etc.

    Aunque no lo usé lo compré y unos españoles que viajaban con niños hablaban bien de este libro: Canal del Midi en barco, en bicicleta y a pie. Montserrat Rius Ed Laerte. 20 euros El Corte Inglés. Mi edición es de 2008, pero no creo que Francia haya cambiado mucho.

    Mi mejor consejo es que os vayáis con ellos.

    Hola,

    es laborioso al principio pero fácil al final.

    Comienzas pulsando donde pone Descargar (encima del mapa) y eliges la opción de 500 puntos o en múltiples tramos. Ya lo tienes.

    Después te descargas e instalas el Mapsource y al pinchar sobre el track descargado te permitirá verlo.

    Y más cosas que con paciencia irás aprendiendo de los foros.

    La verdad es que lo desconozco. A nosotros nos llevaron en coche hasta Narbonne y luego cogimos el tren hacia Burdeos, para realizar la ruta de vuelta. No sé si es posible buscar alguna zona no céntrica donde se pueda dejar el coche unos días en la vía pública. Esto puede ser una posibilidad.

    Hola,
    recomiendo consultéis la página web http://www.meteofrance.com , disponible también para teléfono móvil y observéis con el mapa de vientos que los más habituales son del Atlántico al Mediterráneo, lo que unido a que ese es el camino de descenso del Garona (Canal du Midi) hacen de ese sentido de circulación el más aconsejable. Esto puede aplicarse también a la remontada del Loira desde Nantes a Lyon o al Ródano.
