TOUR OF PORTUGAL

This is a crossing of Portugal from Huelva, at spain border, to Lisboa, the capital of Portugal. Nice trip but with many traffic in roads and very hot at summer. First is starts in Huelva and crosses to Portugal (Guadalquivir) in Ayamonte. Then you follow the south coast (Algarve) to Faro. Here, up to the hot lands of Beja, and then to Setubal and Lisboa using two ferrys in the bays.

SUMMARY OF THE ROUTE

The tour starts in Huelva in Spain, to follow the the road to Portugal. We find Lepe, famous for his agriculture, and we reach Ayamonte, the last village in Spain. We cross Guadalquivir river by ferry, to reach Portugal in the other side. In that country, we follow the main road till the finish of the first stage in Vilanova de Gacela.

On the second stage, we cross all the Algarve using the main crossing Tavira and reaching Faro at the end. At Faro we head north, crossing many mountains, but with a not very steep slopes, till we reach the dry plains of the Alentejo, entering at them in Almodovar village, where we end the third stage.

After Almodovar, we find very busy roads, where cars go very fast, and we cross the very hot lands of Alentejo, until we reach Beja. This part can be very hard on summer, whith the high temperatures. We pass Castro Verde, a very rural village before finish the stage in Beja, with 40 degrees Celsius in August.

The road from Beja to Grandola, the fifth stage is not very different. Many cars, straights, dry land and hight temperatures. On the sixth and last stage, we reach the coast, which make temperatures more moderates, and we head to Costa de Cafe, and the piece of land on the other sid of River Sado of Setubal.

We take the ferry to Setubal, which is very easy with the bike, and we cross the piece of land between Sado and Setubal, crossing Quinta do Conde. Finally we reach the Tajo at Almada village, and take the ferry that leads us to th center of Lisboa, the end of the trip.

WHICH BIKE

We do the trip with a touring bikes. All the surface is paved on main roads, so you can also use road bikes with no problems.

WHEN TO GO
Avoid summer for the Alentejo temperatures. Algarve is also in high session. So spring perhaps can be th best time to do the route.

WHERE TO STAY
There are many hotels, specially in th Algarve. In the rest you have no problem in main villages. In small villages of Alentejo it can be difficult to find any hotel.

DIFFICULTIES
The most difficult is the traffic of the roads and the temperatures in summer. Roads have no bike lines and cars don't respect bikes very much, so it can be a bit anoying. Wear reflective and yellow clothes with the bike.

HOW TO GET THERE
To go to Huelva, train can be the best option.

In Ayamonte you crossed Guadiana river to reach Portugal and not Guadalquivir, that ends in Salucar de Barrameda (Cádiz). Regards
