WCRVBB-21-ELBERADWEG- STAGE 08 -Torgau-Dresden 109 km

STAGE DESCRIPTION
The stage starts with a Tour to visit Torgau and his center Marketplatz, and its market in the morning. After that, we head south east with secondary roads, and what you can see is this beautiful skyline of Torgau.

After a few kilometers, we find our third cyclist church, this the best of all. It has a museum with many photographs and objects related to the bikes. There are also maps, information and a map to mark where you come from. Very funny to see that cyclists of all over the world have been there.

After a rest, we have to continue the stage, and our next stop is Belgern, a small city whose main attraction is a square with a giant statue of Roland, about 4 meters tall, next to the Rathaus's wall.
Passed Belgern, the route passes through quiet and intersting paved secondary roads, sometimes far from the river, but we rejoin the river in Strehla, where we find another allied encounter monuments. In this part of the Elve river (and in Torgau) was where the Allied Forces and Russian Forces encountered in their advancing of conquering Germany in WWII.
Few kilometers later, we found the pictoresque city of Riesa. In this city we cycled along HauptStrasse, where we found a folkloric feast and market all along the street. It was very funny to cross the streed till the Marktplatz, next to the Rathaus and Churh of worth visiting.

We now head down to the river, and follow narrows paths beside it. Not many different as previous days, but is in Hirschstein where we find a change in the landscape. We find the first mountains. The path now goes between the mountains and the river.
We suddenly pass under the Neuhirschstein castle, impressively situaded over a rock.

Now the way turns a bit hilly as not in lots of previous kilometers. We don't leave the river, who turns narrower as we head to Dresden. The path is now cobbled and we pass sometimes between beautiful houses next to the river.
After a few kilometers, we find the beautiful city of Meisen, with a very impressive castle and church. We didn't reach the top because of the weather, but the center of the city has a charming square with bars and terraces that invite to take a short rest before head to Dresden.

We have reached the other side of the river with a bridge, and we now follow the north bank for a few kilometers. We also pass next to vineyards, the northen of them in Europe.
We follow this bank of the river for about 10 kilometers, before crossing once more the river with a bridge, with spectacular views. At the very large horizon we can start to glimse the impressive Dresden's skyline, with its chuch bells towers.
Some kilometers next to the rivers, head us to the center of Dresden. We pass through stades and many football fields. Before entering in the center, we visit Dresden Great Mosque, a huge building with many muslim services.

We are now in Dresden, the final of the stage, and we deserve a rest for the night.

POINTS OF INTEREST
- Wesnig cyclist church.
- Belgern platz with giant Roland Statue.
- Riesa city.
- Neuhirschstein castle and the sourrondings next to the river.
- Meiben city and his castle.

DESTINATION POINT
Dresden has a impressive look. It was destroyed enterly with the air raids of the WWII. Here you learn some of the dark passages of the WWII, where thousands of people, died in merely one week of bombs. Now the city is very vively. We found a festival with many concerts at night.
The center of the city is very concentrated and all the monuments can be visited on food in only one kilometer. The Newmarkt square is perhaps the better place to visit, with many monuments around it. Frauerkirchen (not reconstructed till nineties)  is perhaps the most famous, but there is also the Kulture Palace and Vershkersmuseum.

You have also the zone of the Zwinger Dresden Palace and his gardens, the Opera building and all the monuments around the river banks, with the famous terrace with excellents views of the river and its other bank with the Finanzer Ministerium building.
In Dresden we stayed at City Herbege, a good and cheap option considering the tourism of the city. There are also many restaurants of all over the world kichens.

ALTERNATIVE ROUTES
You have few choices to leave the elberadweg from the river and take secondary or main roads that leads to Dresden. But in that part of the country beware there are not many bike lines next to the roads, as in West Germany.
