WCRVBB-21-ELBERADWEG - STAGE 05 - Werben-Magdeburg 114 km
STAGE DESCRIPTION
After the quiet night in Werben, we head south towards Magdeburg, next large city after Hamburg two days ago. We start crossing fields full of ducks and geese and other birds eating grain from it. The secondary roads lead us to a large industry complex, with some big paper industries and the
particularity of a Nuclear Plant that is in process of being demolished.
After some kilometers we reach Arneburg, a beautiful city with a park with a terrace with magnificient views to the Elbe river. It has a beautiful restaurant in the terrace to have a rest and sighseeing.
Few kilometers away and after passing through two small villages, we reach large village of Targemunde. It has many sights to search, so is a quite interesting place to have a rest and look for monuments and interesting points. Starting with the elbe rivers docks, with the castle and the walls of the city.
Just inside is worth visiting the main church, the town hall and in general of the historic center with many beautiful houses and services for tourism.
After the city, the route passes through many interesting places near the river, with marshes, roads next to the dam and the arrival to Rogatz where you can take the ferry to get the other side of the river, where the route continues.
The last part of the stage is very interesting because we reach Havel Canal, which crosses Germany coming from the north and just here crosses over the Elbe river. There is an old juice disrupted, and then the impressive double Sluice of Hohenwarth, with elevates the boats 19 m what possibilities them to cross river Elbe with no problems. It's worth to take a rest here in this point and wait a boat to see the lift mechanism to function. No other sluices like that of the picture.
Here you have an impressive photograph of the Chanel crossing the river Elba with almost 20 m of altitude.
Finally we reach Magdeburg, big city where you can have a rest with many facilities.
