Itinerary description
Marine Drive is quite hilly, and good preparation for the Ladysmith and Saltspring Island hills.
Waypoints
Waterfront Station - Seabus Terminal
Both of Vancovuer's subway lines terminate at Waterfront Station, and it is an easy transfer from the trains to Seabus. Board after pedestrians, at the Seabus door closest to the terminal. There is a bicycle sign inside. The Seabus moves at approx 18 kph across Vancouver Harbour to Lonsdale Market in North Vancouver.
Vancouver Harbour
Crossing on Seabus. There is frequent shipping traffic at moorage in the harbour.
Lonsdale Quay
There is at least one coffee shop, food stores, fast food, and restauraunts around the market outside the Seabus Terminal, and in nearby streets.
Squamish First Nation
The track follows as close to the seacoast as possible, on quiet streets, designated bike paths, and secondary roads farther to the west. After leaving Lonsdale Quay, the track soon enters Squamish First Nation, with a historic Church and adjacent First Nations building (see photos).
North Vancouver bike paths
Well maintained paved bike paths generally follow the coastline. Good views of Lions Gate Suspension Bridge. Observe pedestrian only (no bike) signs.
Beach House Pier
Access to pier extending out into the Burrard Inlet, views of beaches and city. The Beach House Restauraunt is here.
Rear gear-cable failure
Sudden cable failure at this location. Tied off broken cable end in a usable fixed gear. Google Maps found a bike shop requiring a 15 block back-track to North Vancouver, where it was fixed in 1/2 hour. This explains the back and fourth on the saved track
'Different Bikes' shop
Credits to "Different Bikes" of North Vancouver. After a rear gear cable failure they got me going in half an hour at a very reasonable cost.
Marine Drive
Unique, active, shopping and restauraunt street. At large grocery market with food kiosks.
WVYC
Track along Marine Drive passes above the West Vancouver Yacht Club. "Hugos" pub is also nearby.
Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal
At the BC Ferry Dockm about to load for Departure Bay in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. After buying passenger + bicycle ticket at kiosk, walk bike around the ticket building and through a black coded gate (ticket provides the code) and wait for instructions to board and secure bikes on the main deck of the ferry.
On Ferry to Nanaimo
The second segment of this track (Nanaimo to Ladysmith) starts on arrival at Departure Bay in Nanaimo, after an approxemate 1.5 hour crossing of the Straits of Georgia.
