Sainte-Foy - Quebec - Sillery
Quebec (pronunciation in French [ke.bɛk]) is the national capital of Quebec2, one of the provinces of Canada. It is located in the administrative region of the Capitale-Nationale. It is the seat of many institutions including the Quebec Parliament. The city has nearly 530,000 inhabitants3 and more than 800,000 inhabitants in its metropolitan community4, making Quebec City the second most populous city in Quebec after the Montréal metropolis. The official name of the city is "Quebec," although the term "Quebec City" is often used to distinguish the city from the province.
The narrowing of the St. Lawrence River between the cities of Quebec and Lévis, on the opposite shore, gave the city its name, Kébec being an Algonquin word meaning "where the river narrows". Founded in 1608 by Samuel de Champlain, Quebec is one of the oldest cities in North America. The ramparts make Quebec City the only fortified city in northern Mexico. Old Quebec was declared World Heritage in 1985 by UNESCO.
Cradle of French America, Quebec is the main urban agglomeration of Eastern Quebec. Located in the middle of the inhabited area of Quebec, on the banks of the St. Lawrence River, it was founded in 1608. Having been the colonial capital of New France, Lower Canada and, for a short time, the capital of Canada-United, the city is nicknamed "the Old Capital".
Since 2001, Quebec City has been one of the most economically prosperous Canadian cities behind Calgary, Edmonton and Saskatoon8. It has the lowest unemployment rate in the country9. The growing sectors are biotechnology, manufacturing, tourism, life sciences, health and nutrition, insurance and applied technologies. Québec is also an important port center: in 2011, its port is the second largest in Canada in terms of tonnages behind that of Vancouver. In addition, it receives in 2013 nearly 162,000 visitors through cruises.
Quebec City is known for its visible history, its many museums and cultural institutions. Quebec is nicknamed "city of theater". Moreover, its historic district, Old Quebec, whose fortifications that surround it still remain, make of Quebec the only fortified city of America to the north of Mexico.
The expressions "à Québec" and "de Québec" are used to refer to the city, and "in Quebec" and "Quebec" to refer to the province or the Quebec nation in general.
In 2008, Quebec celebrated its 400th anniversary with great fanfare, highlighting its position as the cradle of French civilization in America. Celebrations took place all over the northern hemisphere.
In 2010, the population of Québec City was 511,789, 14 divided into six boroughs: La Cité-Limoilou, Les Rivières, Sainte-Foy-Sillery-Cap-Rouge, Charlesbourg, Beauport and La Haute-Saint-Charles. Its metropolitan area has more than 750,000 inhabitants. (See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Québec)
