Itinerary description
The Ruta del Agua is so named because it follows tracks once used by engineers to construct and now maintain the underground canal that provides Seville's water. The route is similar to a rail trail in that the track is a gradual incline following the natural contours.
The route follows the valley of the Rivera de Huelva with stunning views down the steep slopes to the calm waters of the Gergal Dam, through holm oak forests and meadows and mediterranean forest.
Rest for a welcome drink or snack with wonderful views from La Cantina, a bar in an unlikely isolated location, before continuing north-west along the banks of the Guillena Dam past a hydro-electric station and through more holm oak forests of the Sierra Norte with black Iberian pigs foraging for acorns.
We then follow the old "Ruta de la Plata" highway in a healthy climb to Venta del Alto. The asphalted road is now only used by a very small amount of local traffic. At the Venta del Alto you can recharge the system with a cool drink and as you ride along the plateau observe Sevilla 30 km away in the distance and the shining beams of the Solar Power plants 50 km away to the west.
It takes us back to our starting point on a very good road with very little traffic.
