Itinerary description
A long distance bike trip that avoids the larger road as much as possible, following small roads through the fields. As the track follows some unpaved and gravel roads, this track is not suitable for speed/race bikes, but should be fine for bicycles with a bit more profile. The track is not the shortest way to get from Putignano to Ostuni, but should be safer and more enjoyable than the large regional roads.
Along the way, it passes through a number of towns which has numerous cafes for a drink and a bite. Many of the towns also have a public water fountain on some of the squares and are indicated as way points. Although not all of them might be functional when you pass by them.
In the towns, some of the streets may be technically one-way in the other direction, but with some careful navigation, you should be fine to bike through these streets.
This is a 50 km biking track through "Trulli" country. Trulli are traditional house made of stone, stacked in a typical conical roof, of which you will see many along this track. For more info on Trulli, see this link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trullo
The biking track starts at the train station of Putignano. After passing the ring road around the old centre, it quickly leaves town on smaller country roads.
After about 8.5 km, you'll cross a larger road, also marked with way point "Bypass". The track will take you on a short track that will be difficult to bike and you're like have to walk next to your bicycle for a short but, but it will be an interesting spot with an old cave. However, if you rather keep on biking, you could follow the "Strada Vincinale Barsento" in Eastern direction. In less than 2 km, the track will join you on this road.
Assuming you take the indicated track, you'll reach the main road at odometer reading 10.5 km. You will follow the main road for just 300 meters where you'll make a right turn and and take a country road into Arberobello, the "Trulli Capital". As you get to the centre square (odometer reading 15 km), you'll see the Trulli Zone on your right hand and if you've never been here, this is the place where you'll want to stop and walk around a bit. You are likely to see many tourists from all over the world.
After visiting the Trulli, you'll soon leave town, but have a chance to stop at the local supermarket if you want to (see way point). After that, it's small country roads again for the next 7 km, until you get to Locorotondo. After crossing the train tracks, you'll pass through the tiny historical centre.
As you leave Locorotondo, the best part of the track starts: The next 9 km, will be on the what is practically a bicycle road. The slopes are very gentle and there is hardly any traffic.
When your odometer reads 33 km, you'll be in Cisternino. As you get into town, you'll come to a spot with a nice view, which might be good place for a break.
From here, there will be less peddling and more cruising as there will be more stretching going downhill. From Cisternino, it's 1.5 km to a tiny town of Casalini. After you passed the town, the cruising continues, almost into the centre of Ostuni.
At the indicated way point "To Centre", where the track will make a sharp turn to the left, you have the last chance to get something to eat or drink before the last stretch downhill to the remote train station of Ostuni.
Enjoy the track and leave a comment on your experience.
