Route completed in November 2017
The initial idea was to turn the entire circle on the perimeter of the Philippine island of Palawan on the bicycle, drawing a form of 8, the center of which was Puerto Princesa, the capital of the island and the starting and ending point of the route But a small intercostal fissure in an unfortunate fall of the bicycle when we were closing the loop below the 8th, shortly before returning to Puerto Princesa, caused us to park our bikes and rent a motorcycle to discover the north of the island So, from the approximate 2-hour pedaling we had planned, we only had 6 stages, although later we also enjoyed the spectacular scenery of Palawan on a mountain bike.
It is also important to emphasize that we wanted to go further south and cross from one coast to the other by a track where we found a track of someone who had been bicycling (https://wikiloc.com/wikiloc/ /view.do?id=16387511), but several people warned us very strongly that it was dangerous for that track to pass because it was the only sector of the island where active gihadist cells were hiding, which up to All three had kidnapped Germans for 3 years. We also asked more people, taxi drivers, policemen ... and everyone told us the same thing, so we did not want to go down so much in the south. The rest of the island assured us that it was totally safe and so we can confirm it.
Below we present the 6 tracks of the bike stages and the rest of the tracks on the motorcycle to complete the tour around the island.
Palawan is an elongated and narrow island, the fifth largest of the more than 7,000 islands that make up the archipelago of the Philippines. It has a length of about 425 kms and a width that goes between 40 kms and 8 kms, therefore quite adequate dimensions to cross it at a pedal.
In short, we could say that there is a very touristy sector in the north, practically concentrated in the population of El Nido, some places with incipient tourism, such as Port Barton or Taytay, and a very large part of the island, the vast majority from the territory, without tourism and with very little human pressure. During the 6 days we pedaled we did not see a single tourist, not even in the accommodations. In fact, the only place with an important and quite trafficable population is Puerto Princesa, the capital of Palawan, the rest of the island's territory has a very small traffic, including the National Highway, the main road. It is one of the less developed developed territories in the Philippines, and this is noted, apart from the lack of traffic, in the few infrastructures, few roads, almost non-existent industrialization and a very traditional way of life, which is reflected in the multitude of towns Rural areas that we found scattered throughout the jungle, with bamboo huts, palm leaves and which are the home of the more than 80 ethnic groups that live on this small island. It is a quite mountainous island, but even so the tracks and roads that surround the island do not reach large ports, although some sections are quite small. The only notable handicap for cyclists is the intense heat and humidity, which thanked us for the cloudy days that protected us from the sun and some storm that cooled us a bit.
The first stage is almost flat and all by asphalt. We found a lot of traffic to leave Puerto Princesa and its area of influence.

The starting point and end of the route was the Hibiscus Garden Inn, an accommodation in Puerto Princesa where they were always very kind and willing to help us in everything. Highly recommended

Puerto Princesa

The transit to Palawan is very small, with the exception of Puerto Princesa and the surrounding areas, where it is swarm of tricycles, the circulation is very difficult. The tricycle is the most popular transport of the island and consists of a motorcycle and an adapted and personalized sidecar.

The intense heat is the predominant note on the Philippine island of Palawan, luckily it is easy to find small shops where you can get along the road.

Etapa fàcil i de bon pedalar, tot i que l'entorn no és tant autèntic i espectacular com a la remota costa oest de Palawan.
