Itinerary description

This beautiful and emblematic circular route is a classic in this region of Kerry County. It takes its name from the Strait of Dunloe, a narrow valley that separates the highest mountain ranges in Ireland, MacGuillicuddy Reeks to the west (with the highest peak in the country) and the Purple Mountains to the east (called thus for the purple color of its rocky substrate). Despite the modest altitudes (the highest point of the route is around 270 meters high), the valleys and lakes we will find are molded by the ice of glaciers, because we are in a relatively northern latitude, so that it gave us the feeling that we pedaled higher than we really found ourselves. This route surrounds and crosses part of Killarney National Park, where, besides spectacular lakes with inner islands, we can find deer and also the largest matured oak forests in Ireland and one day they dominated the whole country. Due to its natural value, in 1981 this park was also declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. The whole route passes through asphalted roads or tracks (except for some ground floor tracking in good condition that, if desired, can be avoided) so a mountain bike is not necessary. We rented two walking bikes in Killarney (O'Sullivan Cycles € 15 a day) that worked well for us. We had read that it was a very famous and busy route and that the passage of cars on the narrow road of the Strait of Dunloe was a little overwhelming, but we found very few people, I guess because it was an inter-weekday of May.

Located in a very privileged environment, this mansion is well preserved, both its exterior and the interior, where it is still in a good state large room for furniture and decoration. Killarney

Killarney is a small but vibrant city where, besides renting bicycles, it has many cultural and recreational elements. Its lively streets can be found in a large number of pubs where you can taste a pint and some street music groups that are a real delight.

Una de les millors voltes que es pot fer en bicicleta per aquest sector d'Irlanda. És recomanable no realitzar-la en festius per no trobar trànsit
