Itinerary description

The second leg of the trip runs next to the sea until Allonby, alternating between quiet roads a bit more inland or next to marshes.

Despite being very flat, the whole area is very exposed and at the mercy of winds. When I did it, there were strong gusty winds blowing from the SW, which helped me cruise for the whole day.

I planned to deviate from Route 72 after Whitrigg, taking a gravel path through Longcroft, effectively shortcutting to Bowness-on-Solway. My idea was to add a bit of variation to the route and to somehow justify my decision to bring a mountain bike (the only bike I have) to a trip that almost entirely runs on asphalt roads... The fact that it saved me from pedaling against the strong winds for a while felt like a godsend at the time. Win-win!

Other than enjoying the scenery, there sin't much to see during this leg. Although Bowness-on-Solway marked the western end of Hadrian's Wall, there's nothing of it visible nowadays, as the current village sits on top of the old Maia Roman Fort, which was the second largest on the wall.

Despite being right next to the road, the access is a bit earlier. I missed it at the time and could only see the circular ruin remains next to the sea.

Highfield Farm

I stayed in Highfield Farm for the night. You can choose between camping in a field next to the farm or staying in the B&B. If camping, there's a kitchen with washing machine, toilet and shower available. Nothing fancy but it's all you need in the end.

Quiet hamlet next to Burgh Marsh with cows grazing next to the road. Not very far there is the monument marking the spot where King Edward I died in 1307.

Leave Route 72

The pursits may choose to follow Route 72 alongside the coast, but there's also the option to take the gravel path to Longcroft and shortcut to Bowness-on-Solway.
