Itinerary description

The fourth stage of the trip was probably the one packed with the most stuff to see, with Vindolanda Roman fort probably being the highlight of the entire trip. I strogly encourage its visit without any hurry to see all it has to offer.

The day starts with a very enjoyable downhill section out of the camping towards Melkridge, where it rejoins Route 72, just to almost climb back that much after Bardon Mill and reach Vindolanda. The site opened at 10:00 AM, which allowed for some extra sleep.

After Hexham, the route becomes virtually flat as it follows the Tyne river. However, it required enough braking to run out of front brake pads and had to finish the day with only one caliper, as all the bike shops along the route were closed by then. It shouldn't not come as a surprise with all the extra weight I was carrying around, so don't do like me and check the pads wear before your trip!

The route continues to Corbidge, where you can visit the ruins of the Roman settlement there and ends up in a camping a bit past Ovingham, only around 1 km off the route.

The "Robin Hood Tree" can be spotted far in the distance from the route. Definitely one of the most iconic parts of the Hadrian's wall. If you have time, you can consider getting there through Once Brewed and go for a hike. More info.

Probably the highlight of the whole trip. Check the opening times and adjust your route accordingly (unlike me). I ended up spending close to 3 hours walking around the ruins and visiting the museum. More info.
