Itinerary description
Along the way there is plenty of worthwhile stopovers and the first glimpses of Hadrian's Wall running right next to Route 72 after Banks. Carlisle city center is worth a walk and Lanercost Priory was a landmark I initially missed when planning the route but caught my attention as I passed by, making me stop and visit the remains.
The itinerary deviates slightly from Route 72 after Gisland to pass next to Thirlwall Castle, and after Whitewhistle to reach the camping for that night whilst also offering a distant view of the wall at Cawfields. The last strecth runs on the B6318 and despite not being a very busy road, will still have a few cars passing by at speed whilst ascending, which is never a pleasant experience. Depending where you plan to spend the night, you might choose to avoid or reroute this part. On the other hand, the camping location and facilities make up for it!
