Undoubtedly reaching the top of the Carpathians by the Transfagarasan road was one of the reasons that brought us here. This road is only open a couple of months a year, because the rest of the time the snow prevents traffic through it.
From the hirsute forests we move to high mountain landscape dense with green. After a hard climb, we reached a long tunnel without lighting. It measures just a thousand meters and it is freezing cold inside. This tunnel separates Wallachia from Transylvania. The solitary road becomes, when crossing the threshold of the tunnel, in a pilgrimage of food kiosks and people walking through the snowfields. Attached to the walls of the highest peaks of the country is Lake Balea (pronounced Bulia Lac), where, in addition to admiring it, you can have a beer on the two terraces that have the adjoining.
The rest of the stage will be a dizzying descent to Coartisoara, where we will regain strength and savor the great route made today.
THIS ROAD IS CLOSED FOR 8 OR 9 MONTHS PER YEAR BECAUSE OF SNOW. It is usually open only in July, August and part of September. IT IS ESSENTIAL TO CARRY GOOD CLOTHING FOR THE DOWNWARD.
