Day 1 Alicante-Elda

Dag 1 van onze 7daagse winter-kerst-oud-en-nieuw fietstrip in door het Spaanse binnenland tussen Alicante en Valencia. Onze fietsen zijn meegegaan in het vliegtuig. We waren licht bepakt (de grote tassen zijn maar half vol en in de bagagerol zit alleen bubbelplastic om de fietsen tijdens de terugvlucht te beschermen) en waren van plan om ook flink wat bergpaadjes te nemen. Door een fikse verkoudheid en omdat het daar toch allemaal wat pittiger bleek te zijn dan het op de kaarten leek, maar ook door de kou en de soms harde wind, hebben we vooral asfaltwegen gefietst. Maar ook dat was al prachtig. Er wordt veel gewielrend in de omgeving en de weinige automobilisten zijn erg fietsvriendelijk.
Ik heb deze trip de classificatie gemakkelijk gegeven omdat het technisch niet moeilijk was, maar zo nu en dan wel flink klimmen en goed steil (zie het hoogteprofiel)

Bijzonderheden dag 1: Het stuk Via Verde dat begin bij de spoorlijn ten noordwesten van Alabastre tot aan Agost is erg mooi. In het begin prachtig gekleurde rotsen en daarna rustig omhoog richting de bergen. Omdat het al laat werd hebben we deze route helaas niet verder gevolgd maar zijn we eerst langs de grote weg gefietst richting Novelda en toen via een klein asfaltweggetje met een klimmetje naar Elda gefietst.

Day 1 of our 7-day winter christmas-newyear biking trip through the Spanish inlands between Alicante and Valencia. We took our bikes wth us in the plane, as luggage off course :-)
We took as little luggage as possible,the big bags are only half full and the packingroll only contains bubbleplastic for protecting the bikes on the planeride back home.
It was a lot colder and windy than we expected and because of that and the heavy cold I developped the days before the trip, we mostly rode asphalt and ancient railway roads (Via Verde) with gravel instead of the mountainpaths we had hoped to take. It was a great trip anyway ! The cardrivers we encountered we all very bike-friendly.
I gave this trip the classification "easy"as it wasn't technically difficult, is was however no easy trip because of the mountains. (as you can see in the height profile)

Remarks day 1: The section of the Via Verde that begins at the railways northwest of Alabastre up until Agost is very nice. Beautifully coloured rocks in the beginning and nice views on the mountain range all the way. We did not continue the Via Verde after Agost cause it was getting late. Therefore we took the main road towards Novelda and took a small mountainroad to Elda.
