Itinerary description
Day 06 Saumur to Rigny-Ussé 58.2 km
We departed Saumur along the Bords de Loire avoiding the big hill behind the chateau. The bike path wound along the Loire river then up through some troglodyte dwellings in the bluffs (N47.23691° W0.01032°). Do not miss the chance to visit these caves! We found nothing about them prior to our arrival; fortunately, the marked cycleway heads right through the caves and emerges on the top of the bluff amongst vineyards. We had a nice lunch, with wine of course, along the banks of the river. After lunch we turned away from the Loire toward Chinon. We stopped to tour the Forteresse Royale de Chinon (N47.16803° E0.23759°); King Arthur May have ruled from here in the 10th century. There is an elevator, approved for bicycles, from town up to Chinon fortress. Such a nice surprise on a hot afternoon. From Chinon we biked back up and over to the Loire valley toward Usse. We stayed at a nice little campground near Château d'Ussé (N47.25550° E0.30396°). We found an excellent restaurant, Le Clos de Ussé (, for dinner. The mosquitoes came out at dusk and forced us into the tent; however, sunset is around 9:30 pm and it is still light at 10:30 pm so “dusk” wasn’t too early for bed.
