Itinerary description
Day 04 Angers to Saumur 63.8 km
The highlight of today’s ride was the hand powered ferry across a small canal on the way out of Angers. When we arrived at the ferry, two maintenance men where untangling the chain from debris in the river bottom. Once free of the debris, they pulled the chain to bring the ferry to our bank of the canal. One of the guys held the ferry to the bank while we loaded up the bikes and then we were off. Marc pulled on the chain connected to the far bank and we made our way across the canal. The weather improved throughout the day and we arrived in Saumur in bright sunshine. We passed several wineries and tastings along the road into town. We had made reservations so headed straight to our hotel for the night. Julia requested a day off so we booked into the hotel for two nights. After checking in and cleaning up we headed straight out to the Musée de la Cavalerie (http://www.musee-cavalerie.fr/) (N47.26190° W0.08270°). After the museum we wandered the old town and Chateau. The concierge recommended “Le Grand Bleu” http://www.legrandbleu-saumur.fr/ (N47.25955° W0.07574°) restaurant for dinner, so we headed there. Excellent food!
