Itinerary description
Beginning in May 2016, we commence a 3-4 month cycling tour of Europe. Starting in Geneva, we plan to cycle through Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary and Romania, before crossing the Black Sea and picking up the trail in Georgia. We plan to depart Georgia for South Korea in early August and continue our cycling trek through Asia.
Part 4a: Croatia, Istria Coast - Umag to Pula
Time: 3 days
Route: Istria Coast
Difficulty:easy, but there is not that many smaller road, most of the cycling was on busy roads with a lot of traffic. We used a regional road map to plan our way.
With the Adriatic Sea to our right side, we continue southwards down the Istria Peninsula. On route, we pass the former fishing ports of Umag, Porec and the stunning Rovinj, where we take a sunset walk through the tangled streets of the old town, climbing to the hilltop church of St Euphemia and enjoying the view across the warm Adriatic. Our route takes us further south to the township of Pula, the largest town on the Istrian Peninsula. Colonised by the Romans in 177 AD (but with evidence of human habitation from the Neolithic period) the township contains numerous constructions dating back to this period, including the impressive Pula Arena. This Colosseum, much of which is still standing today, proved a great spot for some photographs.
