Itinerary description
Beginning in May 2016, we commence a 3-4 month cycling tour of Europe. Starting in Geneva, we plan to cycle through Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary and Romania, before crossing the Black Sea and picking up the trail in Georgia. We plan to depart Georgia for South Korea in early August and continue our cycling trek through Asia.
Part 1: Switzerland - Geneva to Feldkirch in Austria near Lake Constance
Time: 9 days + 1 rest day
Route: Velo Route 1 from Geneva to St Sulpice along Lake Leman
Velo Route 5, The Mittleland from St Sulpice to Romanshorn, Lake Constance
Velo Route 2, along the Rhein, from Romanshorn to Felkirch Austria
Difficulty: easy, no steep incline, path mostly on designated bike path away from roads along lakes, rivers and canals, well signposted we didn't had any map but Tourist Information Center provide cycling maps for the region.
After arriving in Geneva, we quickly picked up the trail, following Velo Route 1, one of Switzerland's many excellent official cycle routes, along the northern shore of Lake Geneva. With sunny skies overhead, we found our biking legs as the kilometres pass by, sheltering from the (still) chilly May nights in our faithful MSR tent. Passing lakes, Medieval castles and small farming villages, the snow-capped peaks of the Alps are always lingering on the horizon.
Then, we enjoy some of the spectacular scenery of Switzerland in summer along Velo Route 5, also known as the Mitteland Route. Skirting regional canals, climbing some steep hills and all the time camping along the way, we steadily make our way towards the Rhine and the border with Austria along the Velo Route 2.
