Itinerary description
7 to 9 days tour from Copiapó to Fiambalá.
Good camping/ picnic-sites are at the ruins of Puquios, after passing la puerta the next few kilometers where you can get some water out of a small stream and just before the intersection at around 3000m on road C-601 where you will find the last and best option to get drinking water out of a clean stream before the chilean migration.
Refugio at Santa Rosa has also campsites for little charge. Free stay at the Chilean migration.
Next camping option at Rio Lama. A track is going down to a waterfall. Last water until after refugio 5 in Argentina.
After this there is a new Refugio where the high plains start and one at Laguna Verde. At the later, there is also some space for tents and some hot springs. (Maybe 25°C)
The road is good until you turn off to road C-341 at La Puerta. There was a part of maybe 50m of sand where it was needed to push the bike. Otherwise it was partialy hard cycling until where you turn to road C-601. The next 30km where new and smooth. After the intersection at 3000m the steep part starts on some bumpy road. You might need to push a good part depending on your condition and the weight of your bike.
It is worth being at Laguna Santa Rosa for Sunset.
After the Laguna the road got worse and the last km before the asphalt road starts I needed to push. Asphalt ends after the high plains. Until paso San Francisco it was a lot of lose gravel and so hard to go.
Argentinian side is easy with all asphalt and 6 refugios.
I recommend around 8 liters of water for the tour.
