Itinerary description
CicloViaFrancigena Reims - Col du Gd. St Bernard - Aosta
Information (downloads of the tracks, alternatives, information, ...) can be found at "https://www.voorheen-de-boswachter.nl/frankenfiets/frankenfiets.php", a website of Peter Molog. He also plotted the route to the Grote-Sint-Bernard.
There are several variants on the site: the closer you approach the Via Francigena walking route, the worse the road surface.
Because the walking route does not follow the historical route, it is not so important that you follow it exactly hiking path. The roads that existed in the 10th century have now, more than 1000 years later, become either a Route Nationale or a cart track.
Reims is an ideal starting point from the Netherlands or Flanders. From Den Bosch a JWay of St James leads from Den Bosch via Namur to Reims. On Wikiloc you can find the track of this Via Monastica/Via Campaniensis.
In Reims I picked up the route of the Via Francigena and followed it to the Grote-Saint-Bernard. Only the stage to Pontarlier contains two unpaved sections that could cause problems. Everything else is paved.
When you reach Rome, you can get a testimonio in the Sacristy of St. Peter's. This testimonio states that you completed the pilgrimage to the tomb of St Peter. In order to get the testimonio, you need a "Credenziale del pellegrino della Via Francigena" (pilgrim's pass) that you have stamped at your overnight accommodation along the way. If you are a member of the association of pilgrims to Rome, you can order a pilgrim pass on their website. URL:"https://pelgrimswegen.nl/vereniging/winkel-voor-onze-leden/"
The "Fédération Française de la Via Francigena" has a guide with an overview of the accommodation options and facilities along the Via Francigena to the Great Saint Bernard. The URL of their website is "https://boutique.ffvf.fr/gb/". The guide costs (2024) €12 + postage and is available in French and English.
For each stage it is stated where I spent the night. I use the following abbreviations:
AM Gîte Municipal - Public Hostel
AR Accueil Religieux - Religious Hostel (e.g. parish)
AJ Auberge de Jeunesse - Youth hostel
