The route begins in Chandigarh and ends in Leh, passing through the states of Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh, in Jammu and Kashmir. The total km does not come out by adding the 14 stages that have been published here because some GPS failures (batteries that run out and there is nowhere to replace it or a stage that disappeared when transferred to the computer) mean that almost 200 km are missing. Approximately there are about 900 km and an accumulated difference of more than 12,000 m.
I had the maps I found in Chandigarh and Shimla that did not match reality, with some major mileage errors. At the end of a stage, in Sarchu, I met two cyclists who had a very good guide book, in English, with altimetries for each stage from Manali to Leh, which is the route taken by travel agencies. I was free and every day I looked for accommodation at the end of the stage; I always found something, even in the final stages in Ladakh where there are only tents staffed by nomads who climb the plateau for two summer months.
Luggage reduced to the maximum: a small backpack, 28 l, on the back and a carrier on the seat post with the essentials to change at the end of the stage.
Good bike, with double suspension, to go through the tracks sometimes in very bad condition, especially near the high ports. And much encouragement.

Stage 1.
From Chandigarh, the sprawling city with an Asian cycle lane (executives are seen in the rickshaw with mobile phones, sorting out) leaves by a side lane of the bus highway on which only a few motorbikes and no cyclists circulate. Then it goes up continuously by a mountain road with a lot of traffic. It is no more dangerous than some Italian ports in the Dolomites. Many drivers stop to cheer and some get out to say hello and take a photo with the cyclist. Few Europeans must pass by bike here.
