Itinerary description
The present track covers the southernmost stretch of the Carretera Austral, from Villa O'Higgins to Cochrane. The arrival at Villa O'Higgins from El Chaltén, with its peculiar mix of sailing, cycling, and bicycle pushing, will be covered in a separate track, since I considered that material too different in nature from that covered here.
In this track you find also the round trip to Caleta Tortel, which is highly recommended due to uniqueness of the target spot, with its network of wooden "paserelas" allowing the survival on marshy ground.
Consider that there is no asphalt at all in the region: ALL the roads covered here are unpaved. The gravel (the infamous "ripio") is seldom in very poor condition, except for occasional wet and muddy stretches. However, consider that it does not allow for a high speed or for an easy ride.
The track summarizes five cycling days performed in March 2014:
07-03. the first 50 km out of Villa O'Higgins. Night in a little shelter built specifically for cyclists;
08-03: arrival at Puerto Rio Bravo, and ferry traversal on Fiordo Mitchell to Puerto Yungay;
09-03: visit to Caleta Tortel;
10-03: from Tortel to Río Los Ñadis;
11-03: arrival at Cochrane.

Ciao Alberto, hai fatto anche la parte nord della Carretera?
A nord di Cochrane no, ho scelto la via di Chiloè, che mi attirava di piú anche per tirarmi fuori dal flusso turistico, che alla lunga stanca.
Sono rientrato "in carreggiata" molto piú a nord, andando a Cochamó, che essendo ormai fuori dalla Carretera non è visitato da nessuno, ma credo sia il posto piú bello che ho mai visto. Credo però di aver messo, riguardo a quella zona, solo le tracce dei percorsi a piedi.
A nord di Coyhaique no, ho scelto la via di Chiloè, che mi attirava di piú anche per tirarmi fuori dal flusso turistico, che alla lunga stanca.

Poi Valle Exploradores, della quale devo ancora pubblicare la traccia, e Valle Leones, della quale l'avevo pubblicata, ma l'ho dovuta retrocedere a documento privato perché altrimenti un'avvocatessa russa che ha proprietà da quelle parti minacciava di fare causa a Wikiloc!!!
Una cosa mai successa prima, tanto che quest'estate ho avuto un certo carteggio con Girona, in Catalogna, dove c'è la sede del portale.

Fra Valle Leones e Paso Las Llaves non saprei che cosa è piú spettacolare Non vorrei esagerare, ma come paesaggio credo che siamo in entrambi i casi al top mondiale. S'intende, con il meteo incredibile (anche a detta dei locali) che ho avuto la fortuna di trovare io...
Valle leones vedo che sarebbe la zona attorno alla cattedrale di marmo, giusto?
Paso las LLaves merita molto veramente, posso fare tranquillamente una deviazione di un giorno anche!
La Capilla de Marmol sta a Puerto Río Tranquilo, un poco piú a nord.

Credi che sia fattibile con bici da corsa? Siamo abituati a sterrati (gravel road). Il problema sono i sassi o fango profondo. Spero potrai darmi la tua su questo dibbio

Vedo molto male una bici da corsa sulla Carretera Austral, proprio perché sassi e soprattutto fango sono all'ordine del giorno, in particolare giú in fondo. Non ho incontrato nessuno in bici da corsa, altrimenti avrei potuto osservare direttamente come se la passavano.
