Waypoints
San Giovanni Battista, Piazza Papa Giovanni XXIII, Morlupo, RM, Italia
It was built on the XIth century. Then in 1593 an important restoration work was started. In 1611 the bell tower was built. In 1819 the bishop wanted to enlarge the church by adding another chapel. Finally in 1922 the external entrance staircase in travertine was built.
Grotta degli Angeli, Magliano Romano RM, Italia
The rupestrian church called Grotta degli Angeli is located in the area of Magliano Romano. Some hermit monks of eastern origin built the first chapel around the VIth century. In the XIIth century it was frescoed with paintings and in 1574, it was described as an important church. But these frescoes were always stolen. For this reason, in 1939, they were brought to Palazzo Venezia, in Rome. They stayed there until 1990. We have to thank Don Angelo, the parish priest of Magliano, because he brought them to the main church of the town.
Chiesa di San Biagio, Piazza San Biagio, Sacrofano, RM, Italia
It was built on the second half of the XVth century. In the XVIIIth century there were important restoration works. Finally in 1950 there were other restoration works for the roofs, interior paintings and the main facade.
Chiesa Di San Lorenzo Martire, Piazza San Lorenzo, Formello, RM, Italia
This medieval church is located in the main square of Formello, adjacent to Palazzo Chigi. Mentioned in a bull by Benedict IX in 1033, the medieval church was replaced in 1554 by a new building designed by "Guidetto Guidetti". The church still preserves the frescoes of the Presentation of the Cross and the Virgin enthroned with the Child.
Santuario della Madonna del Sorbo, Strada del Sorbo, Campagnano di Roma, RM, Italia
We have sources that say to us that the Santuario della Madonna del Sorbo was known in 996 A.D. Then it passed under the control of the Orsini family in 1417. But in 1427 it was already abandoned. After that date the church was renovated and its name was "Beatae Mariae Castri Sorbi". Finally around 2015 it was renovated again.
Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista, Via San Giovanni, Campagnano di Roma, RM, Italia
The primitive church of Campagnano di Roma was built in the XIIIth century, and then it was demolished in the XVIth century to be replaced by a more recent one. In the early XVIIth century the ceiling was built by Giacomo Del Duca and the baroque bell tower was erected. The facade still retains the medieval appearance of the original building, with the beautiful Gothic portal.
Chiesa di San Nicola di Bari, Piazza Giovanni XXIII, Mazzano Romano RM, Italia
San Nicola di Bari Church is located in Mazzano Romano, a small town between Rome and Viterbo. At the beginning it was built, in its primitive version, in the XIIth century. But due to the bad conservation status, they decided to break it down and rebuild it ex novo in the XXth century.
Sacello della Madonna del Parto, Piazza Sacello, Sutri, VT, Italia
This peculiar church from the XIII-XIVth century is entirely dug into tuff, therefore from the outside nothing seems to reveal its presence. According to numerous archeological studies, this place of worship was originally an Etruscan tomb (VI cent. B.C.), then a temple dedicated to Mitra (I-III cent. B.C.), the oriental god of Roman legions, and finally a Christian church dedicated to the Virgin Mary with the Child (Santa Maria del Parto). Externally, the church is very similar to a rock tomb complex. The square-plan church is entirely hypogeal and it is divided in three aisles by ten pillars per side. Countless paintings of the Holy Virgin Mary, Saint Michael and Saint Christopher adorn the interior walls.
Basilica di Sant'Elia, Via Sant' Elia, Castel Sant'Elia, VT, Italia
The church originates from a monastery founded in 520 by a Roman notary named Anastasius. The basilica, founded between the VIIIth and the IXth century, was then rebuilt at the beginning of the XIth century. We know something about its existence thanks to a document of December 965. In 1260 a new bell tower was erected, but unfortunately it collapsed in 1855. The basilica of Sant'Elia is a Romanesque structure with a nave, two aisles, and a transept. The columns were likely taken from ancient Roman buildings.
Abbazia di Sant’Andrea in Flumine, località Monterone, Ponzano Romano, RM, Italia
The monastery might have been built in the VIIIth century by Carloman, Pepin The Short’s brother, and completed – from 747 A.D. on – by a monk by the name of Soratte. The monastery was originally dedicated to saints Peter, Benedict and Andrew, but it eventually kept exclusively the “St Andrew’s” denomination. The “In Flumine” part is a clear reference to the nearby river Tiber. The abbey complex includes a beautiful VIth century church with cosmatesque flooring, originally built by Galla, daughter of the patrician nobleman Simmacus (the counsellor of king Theodoric, killed under his orders). Both the abbey and the church were built on Roman ruins. Because of its strategic location close to the river port, the abbey used to be a key point of control of the local trade, as well as the river route to Rome. After a long decline, the church was restored first in 1958, later followed by the steeple and the rest of the abbey complex.
Chiesa Santa Maria Hospitalis, Sant'Oreste, RM, Italia
It was built on the remains of an ancient building and it was also consecrated in 1400. The most particular thing is that there are friezes of the Carolingian Age (VIII century). We recommend to visit this church on the last Sunday of May to allow you to see the "Madonna di Maggio" festival.
Catacombe di Santa Teodora, Rignano Flaminio, RM, Italia
This catacomb of the IV-V century, greatly extended, with many graffiti inscriptions on the closures, is located in the area of the burial ground of Rignano. We can find 900 burials.
Church of S. Michele Arcangelo, Piazza San Luca, Capena, RM, Italia
It is a church of the beginning of the XXth cent. with a triptych of the XVth cent. among its internal decorations.
Convento di Santa Maria Seconda, Morlupo
It is a Franciscan monastery founded in the XVIth century. It is erected in a higher position than the town, so we can admire the awesome landscape of Morlupo and its countryside.
