Itinerary description
Camino de Baztán - In reverse.
To cycle from Pamplona to Bayonne, the Camino de Baztán is a good solution. Other routes (more west via the EV1 and Irún - more east via Valcarlos) are not only longer but also more difficult.
There are also two options to get to the Baztán Valley: The traditional western route over the Puerto de Belate (850m) runs along and partly over the busy N121. Ten kilometers east there is a road that goes from Pamplona along the river Arga and its tributary the Artesiaga to the Puerto de Artesiaga (975 m) on a quiet asphalt road. Both roads meet in Elizondo and from there go through the Baztán valley to Bayonne.
This track follows the eastern variant over the Puerto de Artesiaga.
From Pamplona to Eugi we follow the Camino Frances where there are plenty of overnight options. At Elizondo we arrive on the Camino de Baztán for hikers. There are also plenty of overnight options there. Only on the 25 km between Eugi and Elizondo there are no overnight accommodations. But for a cyclist, 25 km is not insurmountable.
The climb to the Puerto de Artesiaga can be compared to the climb to Roncesvalles via Valcorlos or the climb to the Cruz de Ferro. 7.5 km with a gradient of 2 to 6% and 1 km with a gradient of 9%.
Possible stages are
1 Pamplona - Eugi 28.6 km - Ascent 330 m
Hostal Etxeberri
I left Pamplona in the afternoon.
1 Eugi - Bayonne 84.4 km - Ascent 1145 m
Refuge St Jacques
