Itinerary description

In November 2016 we cycled the western part of Cuba; in 2019 we cycled the eastern part during 4 week, around 1500 km. This is not a difficult route, although in the eastern tip of Cuba it becomes hilly (the part where Che Guevara and Fidel were hiding for a long time; so full with history). Great country, great people, great route!

The first part went partly through farming area, surrounded by impressive cows and impressive 'vaqueros'. The Southern coastal track is amazing; quiet, bloody hot, full with memories of Che, sea views and partly unpaved. Somehow this part is less provided; less food, no vegetables, hardly any fruit. Going inland again, you will pass the bizarre Guantanamo bay area and in the eastern tip you go up the highest point of Cuba. Fruit and vegetables are again abundant. After that you will reach the totally isolated and Cuba-other-style Baracoa. Going North again you will go through the must ugly surrealistic industrial polluted area you have ever seen in your life (and therefore somehow still interesting. This is Moa; large nickel and cobalt deposits I read on Wikipedia. Luckily at the end you will take your beach holiday in Guardalavaca. As well here are options to stay with a casa particular instead of staying in the super-oversized beach hotels.

Just one additional detail: a GPS device different form a smartphone is not allowed in Cuba. In order to avoid problems with customs at arrival (or excitement hiding the device as we did last time), this time we have used an unbreakable smartphone [according to the information; didn't try it -:)] the Blackview BV9100 with a huge battery capacity of 13.000 mAh. Loaded by a hub dynamo and a few sun cells laying on top of the stuff on my luggage carrier; great stuff! And all together lighter then the previous equipment.

If you are interested in the daily routes that end with the location where we have spend the night, drop me an email at jmsipma2@hotmail.com

Have fun!

Regards, Jeffrey and José
