Itinerary description
After a few days of rest in Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon, we make our way towards the heart of the Mekong Delta region. As a centre of huge biological diversity, the Mekong Delta region is also home to more than 17 million people, most of which rely on the Mekong and its many tributaries to support their livelihoods. With a diverse network of interconnected waterways, travelling by boat is by far the most scenic, and most efficient, way of navigating the region. Bound to the roadways by our bicycles however, we travel to the bustling trade town of My Tho, taking a number of short ferry crossings to navigate the many streams and channels along the route. Our journey takes us through a very different landscape to that seen before in Vietnam, where everyday life has seemingly evolved around the watery nature of the land. Turning north to follow the main channel of the Mekong River, our route takes us closer to the Cambodian border. Our final days in Vietnam are spent cycling through vast Dragonfruit plantations, watching river barges cart their heavy loads of sand and waving to passing fisherman as the go about their daily business. We continue upstream to the town of Chau Doc, before crossing the border with Cambodia and onto our next destination, Phnom Penh.
