Itinerary description
With the bicycles back in one piece after their journey from South Korea, we hit the road once again. Negotiating the busy Hanoi traffic, we head out into the rural outskirts of the city. Passing small villages, rice paddies and lonely fishermen awaiting their next catch, we make our way towards the karsted landscape of Ninh Binh. Here, we rest up for a couple of days and take a peaceful boat ride through some nearby caves (watch your head!).
Our journey continues east to the dense jungles of Cuc Phuong National Park, before entering the mountainous border regions with neighbouring Laos. It is here where we are humbled by the generosity of a few local bamboo harvesters, loading their heavy Soviet-era truck with bamboo for the Hanoi market, they take a break and invite us in for lunch and tea. After sheltering from the intense midday sun, we continue towards the small mountain villages of the border region, comprised with their many stilted houses and friendly rural residents, all surrounded by steep rice terraces that seemed to glow a brilliant green in the late afternoon sun.
