Itinerary description
If you are searching for a cycling route in Europe, try this website:
www.cyclingeurope.nl/
Or in English with less options:
www.cyclingeurope.nl/cycling/
We have cycled three of them, this is the GPS track from the Netherlands to Barcelona.
www.cyclingeurope.nl/cycling/routes/barcelona/index.php
This is a classic route, originally in Dutch called ‘Onbegrensd fietsen’ put together by Paul Benjaminse. As you can see, there are some variations to choose from. And we didn’t start in Amsterdam, but in Eindhoven, close to the border with Belgium.
The website offers as well all individual GPS tracks.
Note that just after the Pyrenees, we made a detour. You don't end in Rome, but in Girona. You can take the train to reach Rome from there, but who knows...you might find a cycling track from Girona to Rome...
Have fun!

Hi! I am planning to cycle from Netherlands to Spain and may use a similar route. Is this one suitable for road bike? Thanks!
Yes, this one is perfectly suitable for road bikes, at least for 95% I would say.
Have fun!
Wow thanks for your quick reaction, much appreciated :)
Do you have a comment whether there is lot of traffic on the road or goes through more quiet roads?
This route, and probably the other routes at www.cyclingeurope.nl are especially designed for cycling holidays and therefore as much as possible quiet. Not always off course, but it's very enjoyable. The route will pass by many camping sites (take the poi' s from www.archiescampings.eu). Not sure what your plans are exactly but personally (and especially in Europe) I find it very convenient to put up a tent up at the end of the day, instead of carrying luggage (and the bike?) upstairs to a hotel room. Are you planning to put something as a bike trailer (www.bobgear.com) behind your road bike?
Hello. I'll be solo biking this in May 2024. I'll download the route onto my Garmin GPS but I'm curious if there are any areas where the route is not clear. I'll be packing a stove etc. Did you find it difficult to get food at times? I'm not used to the afternoon closures (I'm from Canada) so I may get caught by that some times. Also, did most of the campsites have wifi capability and battery charging stations? I'm hoping to do some long days, like close to 100K on a few of them. Especially when the terrain is flatter. Since you've biked this route, would you say the terrain of the route lends itself to some long days? I'm grateful for any other advice you're willing to share.
Hi Debbie. It’s a bit difficult to answer your questions with 100% accuracy since I did this trip in 2009. Things might have changes as well. But I can assure you that you will have no problems during this trip, since we are looking at countries where all is organized well. Never you will have problems to find food and 100k a day is perfect during this trip. I suppose all camping’s have wifi these days. Battery charging stations might be annoying to find on a camping, e.g. at bathroom-blocks, at the reception/restaurant, with neighbors or at your own camping spot when you choose to have electricity.
Most important, take the original route from: www.cyclingeurope.nl/cycling/routes/barcelona/index.php
The gps-tracks are free to download:

Have fun!
