Itinerary description
Sankt Gilgen is a small and bucolic town located northeast of Lake Wolfgangsee. Additionally, it is a town known for its Christmas market, and several relatives of Mozart lived there at different times. Behind this town is a mountain, Zwölfernhown, that does not go unnoticed by those who visit this area.
It is a classic summit, without any risks, and many people usually climb it on weekdays before or after work. It combines spectacular views with a descent oriented to the northeast that maintains good conditions for several days if temperatures do not rise. Due to the recent temperatures, snow does not reach Sankt Gilgen, and we made the excursion from Tiefbrunnau. In this area, there are small valleys that, thanks to the cold temperatures, keep the snow in good condition for several days.
We start the outing from the Tiefbrunnau parking lot (the same as in summer and costs 4 euros). There we begin the ascent following the valley where the Weissenbach river flows. The area has no danger and is snow-covered from the beginning. A first steep climb leads us to the trail that opens to the valley where we reach Mehlsackalm. From there, we continue progressing along a marked trail until we reach the summit of Gartenberg, and we go around until we reach Pillsteinhöhe. We can even see the slope that we descended from Regenspitz yesterday. It looks spectacular!
As we progress, we see avalanches on the sunny slopes because the first layer is not yet well cohesive. From there, we can already see Zwölfernhon, which is our final destination. Being a summit accessible by cable car, and with a flat area, there are quite a few people walking. There is also the Arnika Hütte open, where you can have a warm meal and a drink with spectacular views.
Today we have a splendid day of sun and no wind, enjoying how the recent snowfall has covered all the peaks in the Salzkammergut region. We start a descent with very good snow that takes us to Sausteigalm. There, we take the trail that will lead us back to the starting parking lot.
A highly recommended summit that offers various possibilities, excellent views, and a very enjoyable descent.
