Itinerary description
Tonigenkogel (3011m) is a beautiful summit located in the Tirol.
The Tour starts after the small town of Gries where you can park your car. From there, you just have to follow the gravel road covered in snow until you reach the Sulztalam Alm.
From this Alm, you start the first climb of the day trough the forest up to a plateau. From there you can almost see all the way to Tonigenkogel.
This is an easy tour. Usually, the last 50 meters to summit requires crampons and ice axe. The day we summited Tonigenkogel (3011m) it was covered in fresh powder due to a small snowfall that took place the night before.
We had to leave our skis and walk to the summit with crampons and ice axe. It wasn’t dangerous at all and the sun was shining. The snow on the southeast ridge was very stable due to its orientation. The views from the summit were magnificent as you can see in the pictures attached.
We strongly recommend this tour for those skiers who want to avoid steep and exposed final sections. You just need good skiing and physical conditions. There are some north-facing slopes ( 30º to 40ª) that requires a corresponding critical assessment of the avalance risk.
