Itinerary description

Skjaldbreiður is the name of a beautifully symmetrical volcanic cone NE of Þingvellir. It is classified as a "shield volcano", the name ("Broadshield") is therefore particularly apposite. The main track is from a cross-country ski trip a friend and I made in February of 2005, it would be too long to hike. Besides, in summer you can easily drive much closer to the mountain - but this was as far as we could get that day. Not that I'm complaining, it was a great trip. The other variant is again a ski trip from spring 2005 (two months later), that time we got much closer by car.
