Itinerary description

The Raurisertal or Rauris Valley is one of those valleys that combines all the elements for mountain skiing enthusiasts. A giant valley located at the entrance of the Hohe Tauern National Park that the Raurisertal river runs through from its source in peaks over 3,000 meters located at the bottom of the valley, to its confluence with the Salzach river which runs through Salzburg. It is a little-visited valley that offers many ski touring routes, and I had heard a lot about it. At the end of the valley, where you can drive to, there are several accommodations to spend a few isolated days enjoying the different possibilities that this valley offers.

Today we decided to do the Seekopf (2,413m) and the Kolmkarspitze (2,529m). They are two peaks that do not have any technical difficulty but offer a safe route and dreamy descents. Therefore, they can be a great choice on days with a lot of powder snow. They are not the spring conditions with summer temperatures that we have today, but they do not prevent us from enjoying a great day of ski touring.

We start the outing from the Lenzanger parking lot (you have to pay 10 euros to access it). We venture into a forest where we have enough snow to advance without taking off our skis. The forest is long and we progress until we come out and see the Filzenalm. There we will start the ascent to the ridge that will lead us directly to the Seekopf. Once there, we continue advancing to the summit of the Kolmkarspitze. To get there, we need to do a very easy short scramble to a small and short ridge that leads us to the same summit.

Once back at the col, we start a descent that will take us to the Durchgangalm. This descent is splendid as it offers a multitude of routes, it is wide and has an ideal slope to enjoy it. The snow at the top is getting crusty, but when we lose altitude it is very wet due to the insolation and high temperatures of this weekend. Upon reaching the Durchgangalm, we put on our skins to climb a short stretch and descend through the forest to the Ammererhoff, where we enjoy an exquisite lunch. We only have a 15-minute walk on the track with skis on our backs to the car.
