This is the third of the four crossing routes prepared by Nevadensis Mountain Guides, with the support of the guide Alexander Serafimov (Mountain Guides of Bulgaria), to discover the Southern Carpathians, also known as the Transylvanian Alps.

Today 04/05/2018, we leave SINAIA and the natural park of Bucegi presided by the Omu Peak (2505) and we head northwest until the Fagaras massif. A trip of approximately three hours.

It is a mountain range totally different from Bucegi. If this is rounded mountains and very open, Fagaras is a longitudinal massif full of narrow transverse valleys, one of which is covered by the Transfagaras national road, made between 1970 and 1974 by Nicolae Ceaucescu, in response to the Russian invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, to ensure a rapid military deployment through these hitherto inaccessible mountains. It was carried out by military forces that used 6000 tons of dynamite and assure that 40 soldiers lost their lives in the works.

It is a road that is normally closed from the end of October to the end of June. It has 5 tunnels, one of them next to Lake Balea of 884 meters in length (the longest in Romania). The highway connects the regions of Transylvania and Valaquia, with a route of 90 kms from the municipality of Pitesi to Sibiu, located between the two highest mountains of Romania, the Moldouveanu (2544) and the Negoin (2535). We are going through this valley, until we reach the cable car that will take us to Lake Balea, given that the Transfaragas highway is cut by snow. The climb in the TF is spectacular, high mountain landscapes with lots of fir, soon the Balea Waterfall and views of the narrow valley where the road zigzags.

The TF leaves us next to the Balea Cabin, but we must walk with the luggage about 100 meters to the Paltinu Cabin, where we will spend the next 2 days. This cabin located at 2050 meters, was built by express desire of Ceaucescu in 1972 (two years before the use of the road), to go hunting black goats with their friends. In 1974 the roof had to be reformed because a storm threw it into Lake Balea. In 1988 electric power was available. Nicolae Ceaucescu used room 1 and his wife Elena No. 2. In my case I occupied room 16, which relieved me quite a bit of the weight of the story. Between 2007 and 2008 it was modernized to adopt the current form.

Since we started late, the activity of the day consisted of leaving the Paltinu Cabin (2050) and going up to the Col Doamnei (Women in Romanian), located at the foot of Pico Paltinu (2399), from there a fast and continuous descent to the Lake Women at 1890 meters. We remove seals and return by the same path to the cabin, the ideal place to recover from the hard day.
