This is the fourth and last route of passage prepared by Nevadensis Mountain Guides with the support of the guide Alexander Serafimov (Mountain Guides of Bulgaria) to know the Southern Carpathians, also known as Transylvanian Alps.

Day 4/6/2018: We left early in the morning at Cabaña Paltinu (2050) and, going towards the entrance to the longest tunnel in Romania (884 meters), which is located at level 2034 next to Lake Balea. The access is petado of snow and as much the entrance as the exit must be crouched to be able to accede. Although there are luminaires we are obliged to start the fronts.

This tunnel is one of the 5 that has the Transfagaras National Highway, made between 1970 and 1974 by mandate of Nicolae Ceaucescu, in response to the Russian invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, to ensure a rapid military deployment through these mountains until then inaccessible . It was carried out by military forces that used 6000 tons of dynamite and assure that 40 soldiers lost their lives in the works.

At the exit of the tunnel we find ourselves on a small platform that overlooks the valley formed by the Paltinu (2399) and Musetelca (2448) peaks. The view is impressive because the side walls are very steep and the snow is quite wet. We have two possibilities: to draw a diagonal along the side of the road until we reach the vicinity of the Capra Tourist Complex and descend with a slightly more moderate slope and another, drop directly from the platform. The second option is adopted, because the diagonal is heavily loaded in the concrete protections that cover stretches of road, which is dangerous.

We therefore descend directly through the steep slope until the snow becomes extremely heavy due to humidity. At that time we put seals and return to the platform. We cross the tunnel again and, arriving at Lake Balea, we start the ascent to Collado Doamnei. The last meters are somewhat precarious and Alexander supports with a rope of subjection. Finally, descend to the Paltinu hut and the well-deserved recovery beers.

The afternoon ends with a visit to the Hotel and Chapel of Ice that are next to Hotel / Cabaña Balea. Curious site
