CAT / ESP

Ski ascent of the 2,729m classic Malyovitsa (Bulgarian: Мальовица [mɐˈʎɔvit͡sɐ]), located within the northwestern part of the Rila National Park in southwestern Bulgaria, in a majestic and steep area of the park where we locate 31 peaks of more than 2,600 meters of altitude. It is one of the most popular mountain tourist regions in Bulgaria. Its north and east slopes are steep while the south and southwest slopes are the most accessible. The magnificent Rila Monastery (10th century), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located on its southern foothills, facing the Rilska River valley, and the small ski center of Malyovitsa, with three ski lifts and two slopes of skiing and starting point of the ascent, is located in the north. To the north of the summit we find the three Malyovishki lakes while during the ascent on the south-east side we will pass the three Elenski lakes (Elensko jezero), which are nestled in the valley in an ancient and deep glacial cirque.

The Malyovitsa region is the birthplace of Bulgarian climbing and mountaineering. The first organized expeditions were carried out between 1921 and 1922 by tourists from the city of Samokov. The imposing north face of the summit was first climbed in 1938 by Konstantin Savadzhiev and Georgi Stoimenov (about 200m, UIAA grade V+). This was the greatest achievement of Bulgarian climbers of its time and is considered the birth of Bulgarian alpine mountaineering. Later, other walls in the region were also climbed, and the more difficult routes were opened in the 1970s. In the last 15 years, the Malyovitsa region has become a very attractive climbing area with many possibilities for mountaineering and sport climbing.

Other interesting walls and peaks in the vicinity are: Zlia Zab (200 m wall with one of the most famous climbing routes in the country: Vezhdite), Dvuglav (a 450 m high wall, with climbing routes often more than 500 m long), Iglata, Dyavolski Igli (several ridges with the most difficult routes in the region), Ushite and others. A wall with equipped easy routes is "Kuklata", which is located in front of the Malyovitsa shelter, 10 minutes' walk away.

DEPARTURE POINT: Malyovitsa ski resort (1,720m), 27km from Samakov, 35km from Borovets and 87km from Sofia. When we were there the station was closed and we didn't pay anything but when it is open or in the summer they charge a small fee for parking.

ITINERARY: We cross the slopes and begin the gentle ascent along a beautiful path that goes up by the river and is surrounded by a dense pine forest. We pass two springs and when the terrain becomes more open we see the refuge in front of us, 1,960m 2'8km from the parking lot. After the shelter we go up through snow shovels, some wooden poles are indicating the way. After passing a memorial with several plaques we cross a flat area and at the end we start a steep climb. It is the steepest section of the route. We reach Lake Elensko (2,470m), we pass it on the right and go up a tube towards the west to a small pond covered with snow where we turn south. We are in the glacial trough below the summit, it is an area prone to the formation of wind plates, so we climb a ridge to the left of the cirque to the top of the ridge at 2,700m. Now comes a section of ridge with timba on both sides, if the conditions permit it can be climbed with skis (preserve crampons in case you are frozen). Then we arrive at a wide ridge without difficulty and quite flat that we walk (about 500m) to the summit of Malyovitsa (2,729m). We go down the same route as we went up.

ITINERARY: We cross the tracks and begin the gentle ascent along a beautiful path that goes up next to the river and is surrounded by a dense pine forest. We pass two fountains and when the terrain becomes more open we already see the shelter in front of us, 1,960m and 2.8km from the parking lot. We are in the glacial basin below the summit, it is an area prone to the formation of wind slabs, so we climb up a ridge to the left of the cirque to the top of the ridge at 2,700m. Now comes a stretch of ridge with a cliff on both sides, if conditions allow it you can go up with skis (provide crampons in case it is icy). After this section we reach a wide hill without difficulty and quite flat that we travel (about 500m) to the top of Malyovitsa (2,729m). We make the descent along the same route as the ascent.
