Itinerary description
An interesting trip to say the least. This was one of my first cross-country skiing trips and a real eye-opener! On the upward journey it rained constantly and the glacier's surface was covered with a few inches of water at lower elevations, then volcanic ash (very abrasive!) higher up. On the way down conditions were a little better - at least I managed to work up enough speed to do a headlong dive into a big pool of standing water - where I practically drowned before being rescued by my fellow travellers.
If you want to use this track then note that this journey takes you across a heavily crevassed glacier - a route that was safe when we were there need not be safe today ...
