Monday 01.04.2019 - Stage 3: Heinseter - Rauhelleren
The amenities in Heinseter are so good, the rooms and the atmosphere so nice that it costs to say goodbye to the shelter. Today's stage is short, with very little difficulty apart from a small colladito so we take our time to have breakfast and prepare the sandwiches for lunch. Two companions, nevertheless, decide to leave us to cure some sores that they have in the sole of the foot. The refuge opened its doors for us a week before the start of the season and today, our guests return to their home with snowmobiles; Vito and Toni will accompany them to the nearest city and we will meet at the end of the crossing in Rjukan. May luck be with you.
At 9:30 we said goodbye and headed southwest, climbing the Selstønnutan at a right angle from where we arrived yesterday. Once on the other side we descend the Store Selstønne valley and continue without changing our course between the Geitsjøhovda and Tormodbrotet mountains (1,254 and 1,325 m, respectively). To our right are the imposing and sharp summits of the Midtnuten (1,412 m) and the Langenuten (1,369 m) that for the passionate mountaineers that we are, would like to have more time in the area to be able to approach us and perhaps, to try their ascent; today unfortunately, we should be content to look at them with suspicion.
At about 3pm we reached the Hansbu hut on its rocky pedestal and before long, in front of Lake Langesjøen, the Rauhelleren refuge appears (DNT, 1,230 m). It is a great and comfortable refuge with the torkerom, bathroom and hot showers located in another building in front of the main building. With a privileged location above the lake we find in Rauhelleren a very good telephone coverage but scarce data coverage. Even so we managed to exchange text messages with the friends we have left this morning at Heinseter and inform us that they have arrived safely in the city. They will spend the next few days sightseeing in Norway before we meet again in Rjukan, when the voyage ends.
