Fifth day in the heart of the Urho Kekkonen National Park, Finland. "Vinga nois, ja son a quart de set"! These are the first words of the Vito while I am still waking up. The girls have already put water to heat and it will not be long until a smell of tea or coffee floats in the air. For breakfast this morning, those who have to do pulkero: double porridge ration. The "horses" need energy! After breakfast, as each day comes one of those hours of chaos when everyone suddenly gets up and starts to collect their things! Outside, it blows a lot of wind; the thermometer shows -10ºC.
At 9:15 h we start the road following the same broad track that took us yesterday to the refuge. We take about 750 m and when suddenly, we realize that we are out of the way ... We have to return to the shelter. Such a beautiful track, could not be so easy! In the direction marked by GPS, there is no open trace. Soon we found one but gradually it moves away towards the mountain, so we decided to abandon it. Tonight, a fresh snow has fallen that the wind projects us into the eyes in strong gusts, that sweep the forest. We open traces in the virgin snow; the progression is slow, laborious. The fact of advancing in the forest makes orientation difficult and every 50 m, we must make the point with the GPS. We do not have to upload. For 7 km, the route is limited to flanking the entire Sokosti massif on the right hand side, strictly following the contour lines. We pass at the foot of the Pirttikallionvaara (639 m) and then the Kärppäpäät (544 m), from which we attack a small pass (393 m) that will take us to the Sokostinoja valley. The three pulkas are in the front row. The hill is easy, of little unevenness, but it is very exposed to the wind. Behind, invisible in the middle of a vast wooded basin, lies Lake Luirojärvi (282 m) with our destination.
It's time to go down now and we accelerate the rhythm while taking the opportunity to rest. After a while we look for a place to eat; the thermometer marks -16ºC: with the wind, the thermal sensation equals -25ºC and the cold makes the place very uncomfortable. Beside the road the gusts have formed a hole in the snow at the bottom of which a frozen river appears; there are still 6 km, we have to eat something. Here at least, we will be protected. We had a quick snack with bread and sweet ham, some stuffed chicken that was left over from yesterday's dinner and frozen and a Kinder cookie. Ten, fifteen minutes maximum and we resume the route. We press the rhythm to warm up: my feet hurt and the extremities of my hands ... we can not stay here with this wind! We close the Gore-tex zippers and protect our face and nose. In a short time, we saved the distance that separates us from the lake and we set course to the southwest: towards the cabins of Luirojärvi. From the lake we can see the Huoltotupa antenna (284 m) that we left behind, until the intersection with the free shelter of Rajankämppä and about 150 m further on the Luirojärvi refuge (autio-varaustupa, 286 m).
This shelter is much larger than those we have been getting used to lately and has a capacity for 12 people. As always it is composed of a free part (autiotupa) and a reserved part (varaustupa), of which we have the key. It will be our home for the next two days. Next to him, further on from the log cabin and the toilets, we find the sauna that is too late to light today: we will see tomorrow when we return from the Sokosti, if time permits. God, but how cold it is here! ...
As the night progressed, the sky cleared. It is very cold outside and a light wind blows. After dinner, we are attentive to the lights that come from the northeast because several times, they usually announce the arrival of an aurora borealis. These lights come and go in a matter of minutes and several times, we leave the shelter advised by one or another of the companions. This time, we're all ready: the coats on and the cameras about to shoot, on top of the tripod. After dinner, I shelter for a long stay and position myself behind the shelter, camera to the north, with the intention of taking a picture with the shelter in the foreground. Finally, I move to the lake to expand the field to the mountains but the aurora, on the horizon, is still blurred ... nature today is capricious. When I can not anymore I retire to the shelter and at 23 o'clock, I blow the last candle.
