Tuesday 15.03.2016 - Stage 3: Sarvioja - Muorravaarakka
Pulkeras: the three girls - Elena, Marta & Vito

Third day in the heart of the Urho Kekkonen National Park, Finland. Yesterday's stage, having been hard, we went to bed later than usual, which, with a common agreement, we decided to raise at 7 o'clock, one hour more than usual. The dynamics of the mornings are shot and each one has adopted their customs; things go smoothly. Before leaving the shelter we left to those who follow us the amount of firewood that we found yesterday on our arrival and after a final review, we locked the door. It's 9 o'clock, three quarters of an hour later than the day before. Today will not be as intense as yesterday but still we expect a journey of just under 20 km, so we do not want to relax too. We head south, continuing the descent we started yesterday from the Kaarnepää pass and following the Sarvijoki River. After 2h (8 km) we pay attention to the detour (178 m) that will make us pass to the valley of the Muorravaarakanjoki, full south, and we follow that new river this time in slight rise. We cross several lakes and pine forests of great beauty. We look at a curiosity that is that numerous pines that are here are of small size and have a helical growth pattern, particularly visible in the wood when the tree has died and the bark has been detached. Several theories have been formulated to find an explanation for this phenomenon but the most likely is that the spiral growth gives the tree greater flexibility than its straight trunk neighbors, which would make it more resistant to winds or heavy snow loads. Another possible cause of spiral logs is a better distribution of water around the tree. In straight trunks trees, needles (or leaves, although spiral growth is more common in conifers) share water, photosynthesis and nutrients with the roots directly below them. If the roots or branches on one side of the tree are damaged, the corresponding branches wither.
In a spiral trunk, on the contrary, the resources of the whole tree are shared and the distribution of water from the root to the branches occurs around the whole tree. In the same way, the sugars synthesized in the leaves of a single branch are conducted to all the roots (source: Save The Redwoods - Maria Baka, Richard Campbell ). Another curiosity that we observe is the accumulation of moss on the rocks that are discovered by the water of the rivers, sign of the important humidity of the climate in these lands.

Basically, today's attraction consists of observing the nature between tundra, forests, always walking along the river. At the end of the day we see how the summits of the Ukselmapää (695 m) to the southwest and the Tiuhtelmapää (552 m) to the southeast are approaching little by little, a sign that little is missing for our destination. We arrive at the refuge Muorravaarakka (autio-varaustupa, 263 m) at 16:60 h, with the last rays of sun. For dinner: vegetable soup, spaghetti with pesto and tin sardines; plus the "sweets" that fall: ham, fuet, or some chorizo ...

At 9:30 pm, I leave the shelter. To the north, green rays cross the sky, giving the darkness of the night a mysterious atmosphere. It's cold, windy, and I quickly return to the shelter. About 10 pm when half of us are already lying down, Ferran, who had also left to go to the bathroom, comes back and tells us that the sky is going on this time: an aurora is approaching! Far away at the beginning, blurred, then closer when suddenly, the lights that we had to the northeast behind the shelter quickly move in a large curtain towards the east: a great aurora is forming. We left with the cameras that with the precipitation has not given us time to prepare them, without a tripod, or the appropriate adjustments ... failure! We took a few pictures. The curtain, little by little, fades behind the shelter and under the trees, is all the sky that is burning. We feel that with patience, it will come back with intensity. I return to the shelter and shelter for a long stay in the cold: fine gloves to manipulate the camera, hat, balaclava and windbreaker. The camera on the tripod and go! I have not been outside the show for 10 minutes: from the northeast to the east and then above our heads, passing under the moon, a whole curtain of green lights and lilacs traverse the space moving at great speed: the show is wonderful. We take pictures, without stopping to take us for the moment. For centuries, the northern lights were surrounded by mystery, sometimes feared. We stop to imagine what our ancestors must have thought before such a phenomenon of nature. When the lights go out, we can no longer handle the cold. We return to the shelter and take something to warm up; we are all happy Part of the incentive of being here was being able to watch auroras ... by when next?
