Duration: 8 days
Departure / Arrival: Mountain Center of Kiilopää (333 m)
Highlight: Sokosti Peak (718 m)
Distances and cumulated altitude: 138 km, +2,300 m
Second largest national park in Finland (2,550 km2), Urho Kaleva Kekkonen Park was established in 1983 in northeastern Lapland, near the border with Russia, in honor of the ex-president of the country Urho Kaleva Kekkonen who regularly went hiking . Its northernmost part consists of a variety of landscapes of swamps, primary forests and rounded hills covered by tundra (in Finnish, tunturit) and culminates in Mount Sokosti (718 m). The park houses a vast network of day chalets, shelters and sites for free camping. The only traces of human occupation are the fences erected by the Sami shepherds, the shelters for the hikers and some bridges on the rivers being the optics of the Finnish administration of parks and forests (Metsähallitus) the one to limit the erosion and to maintain the nature more virgin as possible. The marked wild trails within the national park are accessible through the Saariselkä station, the Kiilopää mountain center, the Koilliskaira visitor center of Tankavaara and the Sompiojärvi lake, as well as the parking areas at Kemihaara and Haukiniva (Nuorttijoki ).
The starting point of this trip is the mountain center of Kiilopää and its itinerary takes place along 7 stages through the refuges of Lankojärvi (via Rautulampi), Sarvioja (via Porttikoski), Muorravaarakka, Hammaskuru, Luirojärvi and Tuiskukuru. The last stage between Tuiskukuru and Kiilopää is made by the shelter of Suomunruoktu.
The 7-stage circuit does not dispense with the essence of Saariselkä, but with an additional day, it can be approached to touch the Russian border (Porttikoski-Snellmaninmaja-Muorravaarakka). In case of need or adverse weather conditions, the route can be shortened three times by the links Lankojärvi-Suomunruoktu (13.5 km), Lankojärvi-Luirojärvi (18 or 26 km), or also Sarvioja-Luirojärvi (14 km), which reduce the circuit to 3, 4, or 5 stages. The mountain center of Kiilopää (links at the end), with a capacity of up to 300 people, is isolated in the heart of one of the best Nordic sites in Lapland, 250 km north of the Arctic Circle and half an hour from the city of Ivalo. Hola Quivitok,

Salut i muntanya!

SALUT I MUNTANYA ¡¡"
Hola Quivitok,
Salut i muntanya!

Hola Quivitok,
Salut i muntanya!

Hi, I'm Diego from Italy. I will stay for 6 days in Ivalo. I'm interest to follow the last two piece of your track. Is it possible to use the huts?? We need to ask someone?? We need to pay the reservation?
Thank you very much
Dear Diego,
The Urho Kekkonen National Park is a magnificent site for cross-country skiing in Finland; sure you will love it!
The mountain center of Kiilopää near the city of Inari, half an hour from Ivalo, supports the reservations in the national park shelters and hands over the keys to the varaustupas, that is, to the reservable (closed) shelters. It is also the main information point in the Saariselkä.
From what I understand, you are interested in staying at Luirojärvi and Tuiskukuru. Both shelters, if I remember correctly, are autio-varaustupas, that is, wilderness and reservable refugees, so you have the possibility of sleeping in the free part of these shelters without asking for authorization from anyone (with the risk of being occupied) or contacting with the center of Kiilopää to reserve a bed in the reservable part. For a map of varaustupa and autio-varaustupa refugees, please, take a look at the following link of the National Park.
In any case, I advise you to confirm this information in Kiilopää and at the same time, to inform of your itinerary and dates of occupation for security reasons during your stay.
I hope you find it useful and do not hesitate to leave a note of your adventures on Wikiloc!
Salut i muntanya!
Hola Bertrand, I am Diego from Italy. I already wrote you an email. Thank you for all the information. The next January we have only few days to spend in the National Park and we would like to walk with snowshoes trough Kiilopaa - Lankojarvi - Suomunruoktu. From Kiilopaa to Lankojarvi and from Suomunruoktu to Kiilopaa we will follow your first and last track, but the question is: can we easily find a trail from Lankojarvi to Suomunruoktu? Thank you very much. Looking forward to your answer.
Hi Diego,
From Kiilopää to Lankojärvi there are about 18 km... A good distance to walk on this ground with snowboots. From Suomunruoktu to Kiilopää there must be about 12 km and I suppose that from Lankojärvi to Suomunruoktu about 15 km (it would have to be calculated). Personally, I have no track that connects the two refuges: when we were, we previously drawn a route on the map, by computer. However, the route between Lankojärvi and Suomunruoktu does not have any complication since you just have to follow the Suomujoki River. Also, if you inform Kiilopää of your stay in the refuges, the park guards usually open a snowmobile route the days before your arrival. If you want, I can help you to create a theoretical track by computer. Just tell me if you’re interested.
Salut i muntanya!
Berti
ok tnx Berti
- can you help me with the theoretical track?
in this video we can see one trail min 07:05
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXKBfz_NwMU&index=2&list=PLsIaOByZVHkcLD1BFUb_6TXb05ZBIWg7z
- in your opinion, is it possible to follow your wikiloc trail (Kiilopää - Lankojärvi and Suomunruoktu - Kiilopää ) only with the smartphone or we need other kind of devices??
- I would also a paper map
thank you very much for your help
Dear Diego,
Don't worry about the track, I'll take care of it this weekend. The one you see in the video you send seems correct, except for the "peak" halfway through which seems an orientation error. Also, it is possible that the bridge that crosses the Palovanganjoki River was broken and its authors were looking for a pass further upstream..
You can perfectly use a smartphone to follow the tracks with applications like that of Wikiloc but do not forget replacement batteries; remember that in this area you will not be able to recharge batteries and that refuges don't have electricity.
Unfortunately, I have no paper map of the area but you'll find when you'll be at the national park.
We keep in touch for the theoretical track!
Berti
Dear Diego,
I have prepared the theoretical track from Lankojärvi to Suomunruoktu, with waypoints of interest; you will find it in my profile as a new route. Download it and let me know so I can eliminate it.
Regarding your last question about GPS devices, you can also use an application for Smartphones called MAPS.ME (https://maps.me/) that will allow you to download the map of Finland for free and have it on your smartphone to follow the track even without mobile coverage. Do tests before leaving, it can be very useful.
Tell me if the theoretical track is going well.
Regards.
Hi Berti
thank you for the theoretical track, it's perfect!
I have book 2 huts, Lankojärvi and Suomunruoktu.
On sunday 13 we leave from Florence with the car.
I hope I will let you know, thank you ;-)
Hi Diego,
Have a good trip, it will be a pleasure to hear from you!

Hi Berti,
Me and my other 6 friends are planning a back-country trip to Urho Kekkonen National Park in January. I found your description at https://www.wikiloc.com/back-country-skiing-trails/2016-03-13-20-urho-kekkonen-national-park-finland-8-days-12640614 very helpful, thank you! We'll have 6 days so we'll be taking a shorter route (we'll go from Sarvioja to Luirojärvi directly).
I have some doubts about the route and it would be great if you could help me out with them:
- The route from Lankojärvi to Sarvioja seems to be the most difficult segment. Do you think it may be a good idea to lenghten the first day and go from Kiilopää (actually Luulampi as we'll be sleeping in tents on the first night) to Porttikoski? Then on the second day we would go to Sarvioja from Porttikoski.
I guess you mean the summer route that I marked in red in the attachement? Why wasn't it possible? Did you try it? Was it too steep?
- I can't find any GPS winter track from Sarvioja to Luirojärvi - do you have any tips for this segment?
Best wishes,
Mateusz

Hello Mateusz,
I had to re-study the maps! Although I remember this journey very well and reading you brought mi back very good memories.
From what I understand you want to do the route in 5 stages, right?
D1: Luulampi - Porttikoski -> D2: Porttikoski - Sarvioja -> D3: Sarvioja - Luirojärvi -> D4: Luirojärvi - Tuiskukuru -> D5: Tuiskukuru - Kiilopää.
I have an important question regarding the fourth day between Sarvioja and Luirojärvi, we will talk about it later.
1. If I'm not mistaken, starting from Luulampi will make you gain about 3.5 km compared to Kiilopää, more or less 1 hour (attached map). And from Lankojärvi to Porttikoski there are about 5.4 km and it takes a little more than 2 hours. Undoubtedly, extending the first day a bit (1 hour) and spending the night in Porttikoski is perfectly possible.
2. Regarding your second question, I am referring to the summer route that you marked in red in your file. We didn't try it. But if you look at the last section of the route, the slope is very steep (150 m difference level between the river and the pass for about 1.5 km). Walking in summer with backpacks is no a problem but with 50 cm virgin snow and 60 kg weight pulkas, we did't try the luck. Not to mention that the forest in this area is dense and does not facilitate progress with pulkas... It is a decision that you have to make.
3. Your last question, on the other hand, is the one that causes me the most doubt... Between Sarvioja and Luirojärvi there is no track! You cannot cross the mountain and the only pass is between Lupukaapää and Pälkkimäpää, which I think cannot be done (some gorges, undoing the path from the day before, distances and impassable terrain). I advise you to consult the Kiilopää mountain center (Tel: 358.16.670.0700 / https://www.kiilopaa.fi) but I am afraid they will confirm this point. Can't you really extend your stay there?
I hope I have been of help and you manage to solve your difficulties. Do not hesitate to give me news.
Please, post your answers on Wikiloc so that these comments serve the community.
Best wishes!
Berti

Hello Berti,
Thanks a lot for your reply and valuable comments. Perhaps it makes no sense to sleep in Sarvioja and go back through the pass the next day, and we could stay the night in tents at Pälkkimäoja shelter instead. Indeed, the most important question is whether it's possible to go between Sarvioja and Luirojärvi in winter or not. I'll contact the Kiilopää mountain center as you advised. When I manage to make a final plan, I'll let you and the community know.
Best regards,
Mateusz
PS Last year we went for a similar trip to Abisko in Sweden. If you went to any other destinations like these we could use your advice for our future plans :)
Hello mateusz,
I don't remember the case of Pälkkimäoja but in Finland there are varaustupas (closed shelters), autiostupas (free refuges) and many autio-varaustupas (closed with a free part); hopefully you will not stay the night in tents. Discuss it with Kiilopää center.
Good luck and don't hesitate to tell us about your expedition!
Salut i muntanya,
Berti
