Itinerary description
6 day west coast trip.
My wife and I spend a week touring the west coast. Plan was to do some camping , fishing, sight seeing and some good riding. Camped 4 nights and spend a night in a hotel in corner brook.
Day 1
Deer lake to the gaff topsail then back to Howley to camp on the beach.
Great ride. Mostly old rail bed. Trail up to the top of the gaff is a bit rough but doable with most machines.
Howley has some nice beach’s to camp on. Lots of driftwood.
There is a store and gas station located in Howley.
Day 2
Howley to Lomond
Back tracked to deer lake to refuel. Left Deer lake and hit the trail to Goose Arm pond. This trail is rocky and slow going. Many elevation changes with steep slopes and lot of wash outs. Use caution as wash out conditions could change from year to year. You will come to a junction to Cloudy pond before you link up with white wash road. Take white wash road to the Lomond sink hole. White wash road is great condition and you can make up some time on the way to Lomond. Left sink hole and took trail to Lomond River chalets and campground. Only 6 km away and a great trail. Got a camp site there. Has all amenities. Bathrooms / showers , restaurant, and a bar! Salmon river is a 5 min walk from the campsite.
Day 3
Did some early morning salmon fishing. Decided to stay another night as this place is awesome. Left lomond and did some exploring. Tried a trail near the sinkhole that takes you to frontier cottages. Came to a river that was to deep to cross. Turned around and met some friends at the sinkhole. Hit up the lomond cell tower trail. Great view and some cell service. Headed back to the camp site for some good eat and drinks. Few games of darts at the bar before bed.
Day 4
Seeing how we didn’t make it to frontier cottages for fuel and some supplies the day before. We decided to leave Lomond and drive the highway to the gas station. About 10 km of pavement. Once gassed up we hit the trail next to coleys which links up with the beginning of white wash road. From there it was fantastic riding right to Corner Brook. Roads are well maintained with all the proper signage. Made a few stops along the way before reaching the junction for coxs cove. We did a side trail which takes you down to Manuals. Very scenic area. Left there and headed to Corner Brook as the rain was starting to get heavy. Arriving in Corner it was a pleasure to legally drive through the city. Approx 130 km day. We managed to snag a night at the Hew and Draw hotel which was probably the nicest hotel I ever stayed. Complete with rooftop Hot tubs and on site Broomstick Brewery.
Day 5
Left Corner and headed Serpentine Lake. About 60 km from Corner Brook. Took the trail bed to Loggers School Road. Both in fantastic shape. Turned on to serpentine road where the road got rougher but no problem for a Sxs. Arriving in Serpentine Lake is beautiful. One of the nicest places I’ve ever camped. We set up camp and gathered wood before making some supper. Serpentine Salmon river runs right next to camp so managed to get a few hours of fishing in too.
Day 6
Left serpentine lake and back tracked to corner brook. Some fuel and Tim’s and back tracked some more before taking to road towards Humber. You’ll come to a junction in the road where you take a right onto a trail that takes you down behind Humber village. Really nice trail. Once you break out in Humber village, take the pave road a few km to the bridge. Follow the road and trail system to Pasadena. Stopped at the beach for a bite to eat. Really nice beach with a restaurant and bar. Followed the rail bed from Pasadena to Deerlake. About 130 km day.
